The Royal Style Rebel

Something I have always noticed and admired about Meghan’s style is the hint of edge and non-conformity it has to it. Even while she was with the firm and trying to adhere to their traditionalist standards, she would take a seemingly bland “royal” look and add her own personal flair.

One of the ways she updated royal trends while still remaining conservative and modest is by something as simple as her coat length. The majority of her coats are in a longline silhouette. Hitting at the knee or below towards the ankle. This menswear-inspired fad adds a hint of androgyny to her wardrobe while still maintaining her femininity.

In fact, Meghan tends to favor menswear staples in both garments, cut, and styling in general. Popping the collar, consistently wearing a watch, rolling up her sleeves, and opening her coat are all typical of men’s styling techniques that lend to a more modern vibe.

Much has also been said about the relaxed fit of much of her clothing. This is yet another men’s tailoring technique that has now become a widespread trend for women. The loose shapes of her blouses, trousers, and outerwear give a more relaxed and comfortable air than it would have had if the needlework had been an exact match to her measurements.

Even with her choice of hats and fascinators, they were usually very streamlined with minimal embellishments. Lending to the sleek minimalism of her aesthetic even when under a dress code.

Another way Meghan adds edge to her outfits is through her shoe choices. If there is one person’s shoe closet that I’d die to see, it’s the Duchess of Sussex’s. Be it boots, flats, sneakers, or heels, Meghan always has on an interesting pair of shoes that easily transforms a relatively simple ensemble into a striking ‘fit. It’s a simple way to jazz up what could become a boring outfit.

To wrap it up, there is an alternative flair to Meghan’s dress sense that shows through the traditionally feminine and sometimes ancestral garb that other women in the BRF and wider royal sphere didn’t have until she came onto the scene. She is truly a trendsetter.
