If there is one thing that is a frequenter in the closet of Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, that everyone (man or woman) needs, it’s a button up. Be it crisp white, stripped, satin, or with a pussybow. She has worn them all with considerable panache. Here are a few ways she has styled this versatile piece:
1.) With a suit: As I discussed on my Instagram awhile back, even though she was a series regular on a TV show, aptly named Suits, she hasn’t worn a co-ord suit as often as one might think. The first time being in 2014 for the Alturzzura x Target launch. That time was with a lace camisole, however, not a button-up top. (credit to meghansmirror.com for photo link)
The next time she was pictured publicly at an event wearing a two-piece suit (as far as I know), were the Endeavor Fund Awards in 2018 while engaged to her now husband, Prince Harry. Wearing black cropped pants and a blazer by Alexander McQueen with a Tuxe button-up bodysuit. The outfit has had a proverbiating impact on the BRF and the royal sphere for its sleek and minimalist vibe. The way she loosely tied the bow gave what could’ve become a fussy ensemble a modern edge. It’s another small detail that Meghan nails.
2.) With jeans that are preferably (though not always) distressed: Be it airport style, engagement style, charity visit style, or Invictus Games style, a dress shirt has been worn to them all. It’s an easy way to dress up a casual look without much effort. At the 2017 Invictus Games, for example, she famously wore one in a ‘French Tuck’ style. Which then went viral all over social media, leading to people asking what a ‘French Tuck’ was.
Sidenote: Meghan has worn a mix of skinny, bootcut, boyfriend- and mom-style jeans.
3.) With a skirt: Meghan has worn a button-up shirt and skirt combo a number of times. On a visit to Sussex in 2018, at Wimbledon in 2019, and at the endeavor fund awards 2019 whilst pregnant with Prince Archie. The trip to Sussex is one of my favorites. The leather Hugo Boss skirt coordinated perfectly with her & Other Stories blouse, and the nude shoes/coat gave a stunning color-blocked effect that is one of The Duchess’ signatures.
4.) As a dress: A shirt dress is a go-to for the Duchess of Sussex. She has worn it both as leisurewear and for casual public events. In Tonga, in the ‘Harry and Meghan’ documentary, in South Africa, and on her former @meghanmarkle Instagram account.
5.) As a Jacket: Though not as often as the top four, I thought I’d mention this technique. Meghan has sometimes worn her button-up shirt as a shaket (shirt+jacket). Proving how practical this piece truly is. Over an outfit or drapped across the shoulders. The layering effect is very chic and on trend. Unfortunately, I don’t have a picture of Meghan wearing this, however, as they were taken without her consent via paparazzi.
Overall, you can see how truly versatile a simple top can be. Below are some links to Meghan’s favorite shirt brands. They all range in price from mid-range to high end
